Greenways@Oaklands

This webpage is dedicated to improving and enhancing the Oaklands Community in beautiful Victoria, B.C., Canada through the development of Greenways, including Ecosystem Corridors.

Greenways form a network of interconnected paths or trails for a "human-powered transportation" network.
- The "human-powered transportation" has the emphasis by bicycle and walking versus using the car.
- The Ecosystem Corridors allow nature (insects, butterflies, pollen, birds, animals etc.) to travel and increase genetic diversity. For example, the Ryan Street Greenway provides an important native ecosystem corridor to eventually connect the ecosystems of the grand stand of Garry Oaks at Oaklands school to Summit Park (about 1.3 km).

Background:

The Ryan Street Greenway was established in the spring of 2008 from an unmanaged area often used as a parking area. It was highlighted in the 2009 City Of Victoria Urban Forest planning process.

We are continuing work on the greenway project, and always need help pulling weeds, planting etc.

The major emphasis of Greenways@Oaklands at this point is to fully develop the "Oaklands-Ryan Greenway Loop" (for more information view document). The Oaklands-Ryan Greenway Loop provides an interesting, natural place to walk in the local area. The loop comprises of a few major community-run iniatives in various stages of development:

> The Ryan Street Greenway along an undeveloped road allowance (includes an impressive row of large mature Garry Oaks) and Ryan Hill Park (a newly created park which includes a Garry Oak pocket ecosystem) have been established in the area. A City of Victoria Special Project Grant helped restore Ryan Hill and initiate the Greenway. The project received $20,000 Neighbourhood Greenways grant from the City of Victoria that developed the "Lower Ryan Connector Greenway" from an undelinateated, gravelled parking areas with no developed pedestrian or cycle facilities to a wonderful walking experience in the local area - designated walking pathways in the midst of native understory.

Oaklands Green is a park full of native plants that has been created from a grass field.

The rambling walkway on the road allowance of Ivy Place and interconnected trails completes the "Oaklands-Ryan Greenways Loop".

Other areas of interest include Myrtle Avenue Greenspace.

We would love your ideas and participation in these exciting developments and encourage you to email us at greenways@blockcommunities.com.
